Teldyne FLIR and Ansys have launched a collaboration to integrate longwave-infrared (LWIR) information into advanced driver assistance and autonomous vehicle systems. The companies announced that Ansys’ AVxcelerate sensor simulation software suite is now offered with Thermal by FLIR, creating a tool for perception engineers and designers to help fast-track the integration of thermal imaging in ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) and AV (autonomous vehicle) sensor stacks, the companies said.

Cailabs Opens US Office; Teledyne Acquires Xena Networks: Week in Brief: 10/6/23
Rennes, France, based laser communications company Cailabs expanded its operations by opening an office in Washington, D.C. The company has stated an interest in not only supporting the U.S. Department of Defense, but also the Space Development Agency in its laser communications roadmap.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Teledyne Technologies has entered into an agreement to acquire Xena Networks ApS, a Copenhagen-based provider of high-speed terabit ethernet validation, quality assurance, and production test solutions. Physik Instrumente Establishes Innovation Hub in Karlsruhe

UK’s Central Laser Facility Receives Over $100M for Planned Upgrade
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Central Laser Facility (CLF) was awarded £85 million ($103.2 million) by UK Research and Innovation for an upgrade initiative that includes construction of the Vulcan 20-20 laser, which is set to be the most powerful laser in the world.
The CLF’s Vulcan laser will receive a significant upgrade that will bring the laser’s energy output to 20 PW. The upgrade will take place over the course of six years. Bawendi, Brus, and Ekimov Earn Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Work with Quantum Dots
Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Alexei Ekimov have been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in chemistry for the discovery and development of quantum dots, which are nanoparticles small enough that their size determines their properties. These discoveries have led to advancements in nanotechnology that are now used in products such as televisions, LED lamps, QLED screens, and technology that allows biochemists and doctors to map biological tissue.

Monroe CC Awarded $5M by DOD; ASMPT AMICRA, Teramount Collaborate on Silicon Photonics Packaging: Week in Brief: 09/29/23
Monroe Community College received a $5.1 million grant from the Department of Defense’s Manufacturing Engineering Education Program (MEEP) to fund its optics and photonics associate degree programs. The funding is part of $53 million recently distributed by the National Defense Education Program to 13 organizations. This is the second time Monroe has been awarded funding through the MEEP program, as the nation’s first community college to administer associate degrees in precision optics.

ams OSRAM to Receive €300M in Funding to Drive Optoelectronic Semiconductor Tech

University of Rochester Receives $18M for New Laser Facility
The University of Rochester has received nearly $18 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to design and prototype key technologies for EP-OPAL, a new facility dedicated to the study of ultrahigh-intensity laser-matter interactions. The facility could be built at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) upon completion of the design project, according to the university.

High-intensity lasers enable scientific work in fields ranging from plasma science to particle acceleration, laboratory astrophysics to laser-driven nuclear physics — work that has resulted in myriad scientific, medical, commercial, and industrial applications.

FRAMOS Breaks Ground on Production Facility in Croatia
Sensor technology company FRAMOS broke ground on the construction of its new campus in Cakovec, Croatia, into which the company said it plans to move next year. The facility marks the largest investment in Framos history and is expected to quadruple production capacities, establish advanced R&D laboratories, and provide office space for current and future employees.
